Now that it’s the fall season, it’s also the time of year where landowners are wanting to openly burn yard waste.
However, for Greene County residents, a burn ban still remains in place. The burn ban was first announced on September 5th and it has yet to be lifted. Not only does this mean that no one in the incorporated towns in the county can openly burn yard waste, including Jefferson residents, but no rural residents can openly burn their garbage as well.
Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams says the burn ban was due to the drought conditions that the county still has and those drier conditions are also impacting the harvest season, causing unexpected farm field fires. Williams adds if anyone is found to be openly burning yard waste or other items during a burn ban can face a citation and a fine. The burn ban remains in place until further notice.
