The 90th Iowa General Assembly is currently underway.
House District 47 Representative Carter Nordman says the House Republicans have released their set of priorities for the year. One of those priorities is improving education outcomes and specifically is teacher compensation.
“We need to be able to not only recruit but retain teachers into education. Hopefully bring educators from across the country here and recruiting them to teach students across the state of Iowa. So I think compensation is a really important part of that conversation. I know that the governor has said that it’s a priority for her and I think a lot of members of the legislature would agree.”
Nordman points out another priority for the House Republicans is ensuring that Iowa is safe and secure by being tougher on crime to stop repeat offenders and supporting law enforcement however they can. Other priorities include possible additional tax cuts and look at efficiencies with long-term care facilities and services.
The committees that Nordman serves on this session includes being the chair of the education appropriations committee, as well as the commerce, appropriations, judiciary and local government committees. Raccoon Valley Radio will continue to interview Representative Nordman as well as State Senator Jesse Greene throughout the 2024 Iowa Legislative Session.
