Following the tragic events that happened at Perry High School last week, Iowa Senator Sarah Trone-Garriott offered suggestions to mitigate gun violence.
Trone-Garriott describes what she thinks are some of the steps that need to be taken regarding gun control following the January 4th shooting that killed a sixth grader and injured several others.
“And know that there’s just not one answer to this complex problem. Sometimes when people talk about ‘Ok we need to respond,’ you get an answer like, ‘Oh, well you want to do this or you want to do that.’ There are so many things that we need to work on and know that there’s research being done into the characteristics of mass shooters to give us a way to identify and develop interventions to stop these tragedies before they happen. There’s so many things that we can do to save people from taking their own lives and hurting others.”
Trone-Garriott adds that gun suicide accounts for majority of tragedies in not only Iowa but the United States. The Area Education Association (AEA’s) will be in the Perry community going forward providing support as the city continues to heal.
