The newest member on the Dallas County Supervisors Board discusses her experience so far in a new position.

Julia Helm ran unopposed in the 2024 general election for Supervisor District 2, as she succeeded Mark Hanson, who was in the position for 20 years. Helm tells Raccoon Valley Radio that she’s been working for Dallas County for 16 years, with the past eight serving as the Auditor. She details that even though she’s familiar with the county, there are nuances when it comes to the responsibilities of a county supervisor.

However, Helm reveals that the job has been a learning curve, and is approaching it with grace.

“It’s been quite humbling and I’m still learning a lot as not only the supervisors work within the county system, and really getting my hands around the complexity of transportation, and the federal money that’s coming in to help people has been a really humbling experience. We still live in the greatest county in the state as far as I’m concerned. We have a lot of opportunities and facilities, and just fun things going on in the county all the time, and I’m just very happy to be apart of it.”

Helm praises the elected officials and department heads for their commitment to service and that she’s receiving help with managing the financial budget in the county. She believes that the success of Dallas County boils down to the fact that people are willing to form healthy working relationships with each other. She adds that it’s been truly a blessing to work alongside Supervisor Brad Golightly and Chair Kim Chapman.
