It’s Greene County and Grand View Christian in season opening high school girls’ soccer at 5 p.m. today at the James W. Cownie Soccer Complex on the southeast side of Des Moines. It’s a Heart of Iowa Activities Conference match and it’s also the debut of Wes Anderson as head coach and Shelby Mincy as the assistant.
Wins have been tough to come by for the Rams with a 2-52 combined mark over the last four seasons. Greene County was 0-12 in 2024. There’s a mixture of returning letter winners and newcomers for the coaches to choose from. All four goals scored last season came from 2024 senior Esther Van Horn, so improving the offense is one of the points of emphasis.
Junior goalkeeper Lucy Vander Linden is back after recording 175 saves a season ago,. Others are hoping to help shore up a defense that allowed near seven goals per contest.
The Thunder went 6-8 a season ago and one of those wins was 6-0 vs. the Rams. GVC had 48 goals last season and only three were scored by 2024 seniors.
