Tomorrow is an opportunity for Greene County youth to enter a free contest and win prizes.
The Greene County Conservation Board is hosting the Kids Fishing Derby at Spring Lake Park, near Grand Junction, tomorrow from 9am-noon. Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Aron Arthur helps out with the event and says there are three age divisions including 4-9 year olds, 10-12 year olds, and 13-15 year olds.
“The way that one works is each fish you catch you get a ticket that goes into a drawing for winning prizes. They’re going to have to catch some fish if they want to have a better opportunity to get a prize. So it puts a little incentive to see how good your fishing skills are.”
Conservation Director Tanner Scheuermann points out that the prize packages include items for beginners in certain outdoor activities such as a catfishing package, along with a camping and a hiking package, and a disc golf starter package. He notes that each participant will receive a free fishing pole, courtesy of the sponsors and the fundraising efforts of Butch Ganoe and Jeremiah Goughnour. He appreciates all of the donations for the prize packages and adds that registration will happen before the contest begins at 9am.
