Both Guthrie and Dallas Counties saw thunderstorms roll through late Thursday night, as Guthrie Center witnessed some tornadic activity.
According to the National Weather Service, northwestern Guthrie County was under a severe thunderstorm warning after one was reported along the line from near Kirkman and northwest of Walnut at 10:47pm. Raccoon Valley Radio’s Severe Weather Action Team was live on air at 10:55pm. At 11:20pm, the western portion of Dallas County was roped into the severe thunderstorm warning when storms were located nine miles east near Exira.
The National Weather Service then placed southeastern Guthrie County in a tornado warning after a strong thunderstorm was spotted near Casey at 11:46pm. Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Coordinator Jeremy Cooper confirmed that there were a few areas that received 70 mile per hour wind gusts and penny size hail. Fire Departments in Stuart, Guthrie Center, and Panora reported large tree limbs and whole trees down. The National Weather Service ended the thunderstorm warning in Guthrie County a little after 12:30am.
From there, the storm really embraced Dallas County, specifically with high winds of 50-60 miles per hour in Dallas Center, then rain in Minburn and Adel. Mike Howell with the Dallas Center Fire Department emphasized that there were between 50-60 mile per hour wind gusts. The breadth of the storm really seemed to mitigate and right before 1am, the Severe Weather Action Team wrapped up the coverage.
There were four members from the Raccoon Valley Radio Severe Weather Action Team, along with Weatherology. Raccoon Valley Radio’s Severe Weather Action Team provides live coverage of severe thunderstorm or tornado warnings for Dallas, Guthrie, and Greene counties until the storms move out of the coverage area or drop below severe levels.
