Greene County opened the high school volleyball season on Tuesday night with a 3-1 victory over CMB (Maxwell) in the middle school gym in Jefferson. Some teams in Iowa have played 20 games and more than 35 sets, but Tuesday was opening night for the Rams. Scores were 25-13, 22-25, 25-15, 25-23. Coach Donna Carhill’s team is 1-0 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play while the Raiders fell to 1-1 in the conference, 1-2 overall, and 5-7 in sets.
The Rams took control of the first set early on and led 11-4 before CMB closed the gap to 11-9. Greene County led 12-10 before scoring 13 of the final 13 points of the set. The second set saw the teams go back-and-forth, but the Rams were up 13-10 before the Raiders went on a 12-2 run for a 22-15 lead. Then it was Greene County’s turn for a run of seven straight points to tie things up at 22-22. In the end, CMB scored the last three points to win and even up the evening at 1-1. Set three was led by the Rams from start to finish for a 2-1 advantage. The fourth and final set saw the Rams trail 2-9 before getting back into it. Down 10-16, Greene County close the gap to three at 14-17. At that point, the Rams scored six in a row for a 20-17 lead, but CMB wasn’t done. They tied it at 21-21 before Greene County went up 24-22. The Raiders made it 24-23 and were serving for the tie when the ball was served into the net to end the set and game.
Class 3A sixth ranked Nevada visits Greene County in the middle school gym in Jefferson on Sept. 11.
