October 6th through 11th is National Fire Prevention Week, and the Perry Volunteer Fire Department is teaching students safety tips for emergency situations.
Fire Chief Grason Hill said that the department took a fire truck to Perry Elementary, St. Patrick’s Catholic School, and Dallas County New Opportunities in Perry on Thursday for a chance for students to learn all the functions of the vehicle and gave them booklets relating to fire safety.
Hill pointed out that firefighters instructed students on the process behind “stop, drop, and roll,” navigating around a hot oven or stove, and how to safely exit a home if there’s smoke. He highlighted that firefighters love getting to educate youth about safety, and believes the children get a kick out of it as well.
“These little kids get so excited when they see a fireman and the gear you put on. You explain about the safety of being a fireman and don’t ever be afraid to see one. We look so different with all of our gear on. We want kids to feel comfortable around, whether it be a fireman, a police officer, they are there to help you. It’s very very enjoyable.”
In addition to going to the schools, Hill said that the volunteer fire department will be making an appearance at the Public Safety Day event at the HyVee in Perry tomorrow from 10am-1pm.
