It is Halloween time and there are lots of Beggar’s Nights and activities happening in Greene County.
The festivities for today include the Halloween Party at the Greene County Community Center from 3:45-5pm with age-appropriate games, crafts and free candy for the youth. The annual Spook the Loop is from 4:40-6pm on the downtown square in Jefferson. Families can bring their kids in their costumes and get more free candy from different businesses and organizations.
The Jefferson Public Library is hosting their program called, “The Scariest Campfire Stories You’ve EVER Heard!” by Ron Keres from 5-6:30pm. Attendees can watch the skit, do other games and crafts, while getting even more candy. To wrap everything up, a free concert is at the Greene County High School auditorium from 6:30-7:30pm with the middle and high school bands performing.
Additionally, there are several Beggar’s Nights happening across Greene County. The city of Paton has its Beggar’s Night tonight from 5-6:30pm. Then tomorrow will be the cities of Jefferson, Scranton and Churdan from 5-7pm. Jefferson Police Chief Mark Clouse advises families to apply certain safety measures on their child’s costume to make them more visible to motorists.
“You know, obviously reflective costumes or they make reflectors that you can put on your costumes, (or) the easiest thing is a flashlight, just carry a flashlight with you. They have all kinds of red flashing lights that you can buy to put on yourself, a lot of different things. And I don’t think any of it is overkill, I think the more that you can be visible, the better off you’re going to be.”
Additional safety reminders that Clouse suggests on Beggar’s Night are only going to houses that have their porch lights on, watch for moving traffic at intersections or when crossing the street and be aware of anything a child may get that looks suspicious.
