The DCG Mustangs competitive cheerleading squad placed 4th in the stunt category at the Iowa High School Cheerleading Association state championships on Saturday evening.
It was a busy weekend for DCG sports across the board, including the group that provides the energy for those teams: the cheer squad. Off the sidelines and into the limelight, competitive cheer had its state competition this past weekend at the 4H and Jacobson Buildings on the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
Cheer/dance went first with the stunt group to follow. Mustang fans are familiar with the cheer squad and their routine as it is very similar to the cheers on Friday nights. Unfortunately, cheer/dance didn’t place in the first event, but they still had one more group to go.
The team went back out a couple of hours later, and this time around, they dazzled in the stunt category. The Mustangs tumbled their way to a top-five finish, placing 4th overall in stunt.
With the fall season coming to a close, the cheer squad will take a much-deserved break before the winter sports schedule picks up with basketball and wrestling.
