
Three Perry Jayettes battled their way to the top of their weight classes to place second or first at the Class 2A region 5 tournament in Ottumwa. Amelie Canales, Ayden Erickson and Cate Erickson all placed in the top two to qualify for the girls state wrestling meet next week in Coralville.
At 120, Amelie Canales placed 2nd, defeating Avah Blakemen of Des Moines Public Schools by fall in 25 seconds to secure her place at the state tournament. In the 125 weight class, Ayden Erickson also placed second, defeating Danica VanBaale of Pella by no contest to claim second. In the 130 weight class, Cate Erickson brought home the gold and punched her ticket to state, winning all four of her matches and defeating Izzy Duncan of Raccoon River-Northwest by decision 9-3 to claim first place.
The regular season for the Perry Jayettes wrestling team comes to a close, with Canales and the Erickson sisters now shifting their focus to the girls state wrestling meet at the Xtreme Arena in Coralville next week, on February 5th and 6th.
