Mustangs boys’ soccer begins its season in just over a week. They open up at Johnston High School on Monday, March 30th, to begin their season with hopes to continue their recent success.

DCG is no stranger to high expectations, making it to the state tournament in each of their last seven seasons, save the COVID year. Winning is entrenched in the culture of Mustangs boys’ soccer, and while the goal of the state tournament remains, it has become a more unspoken goal. Everybody plays for the state title, so head coach Collin Lane has zeroed in on what he and his boys can control. “Effort, attitude, and energy” are Lane’s pillars, and he knows that when you take care of those, the rest will follow.

The team was state champions in 2024, and in 2025, they came up short of a repeat bid, losing in the quarterfinal round to Cedar Rapids Washington. While they were the top team in the Little Hawkeye, it was an unexpected loss for DCG. This year, a new group of senior leaders is ready to step up. Six of the current seniors have been on varsity for three years, including the run to the title in ‘24. With this experience and veteran leadership, this team knows they have a high ceiling and have set expectations for themselves to hoist the 3A trophy at the end of the year.
