A homeless man was recently arrested for two alleged incidents of passing bad checks at a Jefferson business.

According to court documents, the Jefferson Police Department began the investigation on January 8th when an officer was notified of the bad checks from a Jefferson business, with the first one being for $545 on December 23rd and $304 on December 27th. Court documents show that the officer found out that there was an active investigation with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, where the individual that has been using the checks belonged to a resident that reported a stolen checkbook and several checks had been used at various locations.

The criminal complaint states that the Jefferson Police Officer obtained surveillance footage from another business in Boone that showed two male suspects, of which the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as 42-year-old Shawn Jones. The affidavit says the officer was told by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office that Jones had been at the Webster County Jail, and the booking photo was obtained by the officer, who then showed the employee of the Jefferson business who positively identified Jones.

A warrant was issued on February 2nd charging Jones with two Class D Felonies for forgery, two aggravated misdemeanors for identity theft and two serious misdemeanors for fourth degree theft. He was arrested on March 24th after he was found to be at the Pocahontas County Jail. Jones was then booked into the Greene County Jail.
