A House bill made it through the second funnel, and is still being considered in the Senate.
Representative for House District 23 Ray Sorensen says that House File 2102 would require drivers license tests to be administered in English only. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that there are pros and cons to this.
“The core argument behind the bill is safety, making sure drivers on the road can read traffic signs, understand warnings and follow the rules of the road. That’s a legitimate concern and public safety should always be the priority. But there’s another side to this. If someone is already living and working here and needs to drive, we want them to go through the proper licensing process. We want them tested, trained and insured. If we create barriers that make it harder for someone to get licensed, the risk is they may still drive just without training or certification.”
Sorensen mentions that the issue comes down to balancing safety and practicality, as roads should be safe, but with people inside the system and not outside it. He adds that the goal should always be more trained and licensed drivers instead of fewer.
