There are several activities going on for Greene County 4-H’ers.

Greene County Conservation Naturalist Jacob Fernholz helps out with the Shooting Sports 4-H Club and last month, some of the youth attended a shooting simulator at Grandview University. He points out that coming up on Monday, Shooting Sports will be at Slinginger Woods to practice at 4:30pm with rifles and shotguns. Greene County ISU Extension 4-H and Youth Coordinator Samantha Hardaway says 35 youth have signed up for Shooting Sports and any 4-H’er can participate in this club, while also being a part of their traditional club.

Additionally, Hardaway states the popular sheep and goat weigh-in takes place on May 9th from 7:30-11am at the Greene County Fairgrounds. She stresses one thing about the upcoming weigh-in.

“If you are not able to make that date, important announcement, we are the last sheep and goat weigh-in in the state of Iowa. So you need to plan accordingly and either attend a weigh-in ahead of time or make sure you can make it to our weigh-in on May 9th.”

Hardaway reminds 4-H’ers that swine tags are available at the Greene County Extension Office in Jefferson and those must be purchased by the deadline of May 15th. She points out that horse practices will begin May 20th and are every Wednesday through July 1st, ahead of the Greene County Fair. Hardaway adds that there are still spots available for 4-H’ers to participate in some project workshops that help youth get an item ready to show at the county fair.
