It is National Correctional Officers Week and today we highlight the longest tenured jailer on staff with the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.

Tressa Hatfield is the Jail Administrative Assistant and has been working as a jailer for 20 years. Some of her responsibilities include taking care of the inmates by getting them their meals from the Greene County Medical Center, or taking them to exercise and if they need other items to write letters or to do other reasonable day to day activities. She also helps enter an inmate’s information and charges into a database and keep those on files until that individual is done with their time in the jail.

Hatfield tells Raccoon Valley Radio what she enjoys the most about her job as a jailer.

“It’s just not the same thing everyday. It’s not a routine, I mean it is, but it isn’t, because you have so many different people in scenarios that you work with that it’s not the same day everyday.”

Hatfield talks about the type of mentality that individuals should have if they want to be a jailer and to help with the mind-set of the inmates.

“Probably just trying to listen. Listen to what they (the inmates) say. They all voice what they think but you can’t pass judgement on them, because it’s not your job. I am just here to  maintain the jail and take care of them and make sure that they stay safe.”

Hatfield adds that their six-person jail staff are a great bunch of people who enjoy what they do and who work well together.
