A local tradition in Scranton is coming up soon for an outdoor activity.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Aron Arthur says the 14th Annual Steven Squibb Memorial Scranton Kids’ Fishing Day is on Friday, June 5th from 5-7pm at the Scranton Pond. He invites youth from 4-17 years old to sign up.

“It’s a great event, I’ve worked it since I transferred here five years ago. It’s put on by the Squibb family. But they give out a lot of prizes and it’s a great thing for the Scranton area kids. It’s a really good event. Usually they catch quite a few bluegills, a few crappies and a few bass. It’s a good event.”

Arthur encourages registrations by tomorrow to be guaranteed a prize on that day.

“Something that’s age-related to the kids that register. When they register, they’re not going to give a four-year-old something that you would give to an adult. They have age-appropriate prizes, so that’s why they want you to register. So, it makes it even better because it gives the kids something they may actually use. They also give away basketballs, it’s tough to get kids outside. It’s not all fishing stuff, but a lot of it is outdoor related equipment.”

Arthur adds that registration forms can be found at the M.F. and Maude E. Marchant Memorial Library in Scranton or by calling Ashley Squibb at 515-370-3505.
