The Greene County High School girls’ basketball team is 4-4 overall and 4-3 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play at the break for the holidays. Head coach Chad Morton told Raccoon Valley Radio that injuries are taking a toll. Sophomore reserve Hannah Promes tore a knee ligament on Dec. 13 in a game at Perry, and is done for the season. The coach had been suiting just eight varsity players prior to that injury, but since then he increased the number of varsity players suiting up to 10. “We’ll be looking to get the girls into condition once we get back to practice next week. Even though we have 27 girls out (grades 9-12), we have some injuries, which has decreased numbers on the varsity and JV to seven or eight girls. We’re going to work hard in practice to get in condition so we can sustain our health and get through the rest of our schedule with no further injuries.”

Leading scorer Kayla Mobley has generally been healthy, but she did leave the Dec. 19 game vs. North Polk (Alleman) with an apparent injury in the fourth quarter and the Rams ahead, 46-43. Mobley did return to the court, but the Comets were ahead by that time and they out scored the Rams 15-3 in the last 7;14 of the game en route to a 58-49 victory in Jefferson.
