Two weeks and 10 games straight on the road for the Greene County varsity basketball teams took its toll as the Rams fell twice in Alleman to North Polk on Tuesday night. The Comets swept the twin bill with a 50-37 girls’ victory and a late come-from-behind boys’ win by a 55-54 final. The Rams went a combined 1-9 from Jan. 23-Feb. 3 with the lone victory being a girls’ win at South Hamilton in the first of the 10 games.

On Tuesday night, the Greene County girls trailed 35-31 with 5:13 to play in the game and had the ball, but were out scored 15-6 the rest of the way to fall to 7-11 on the season and 7-9 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play. NP improved to 7-9 in the league and 9-10 overall. Macy Gill had 18 points for the Comets and Kayla Mobley scored 14 for the Rams.

The boys’ game saw Greene County fall behind 22-10 in the second quarter following a 14-0 scoring run by the Comets. The Rams climbed back to within 27-23 at halftime, and eventually took a five point lead in the fourth quarter and had the ball. In the closing minute, however, the Comets trailed 54-52 and had the ball when senior Blake Brauer hit what proved to be the game-winning three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining. The Rams had what appeared to be what would have been a game-winning wide open point blank layup with one second left, but the shot was no good, and the Comets earned a split of the two-game season series. Trey Tucker had 23 points and Tyler Beger 22 for the Rams, who fell to 6-11 and 6-9, while Hunter Dark scored 20 for the Comets, now 7-10 and 6-9.

Saydel (Des Moines) visits Greene County in the middle school gym in Jefferson on Friday night with coverage on KG98 starting at 5:45 p.m. The girls play at six with the boys to follow.
