Several ADM athletics teams are in action Thursday afternoon and evening, including both golf teams and the boys soccer squad.
Both golf squads are at home at the River Valley Golf Course just north of Adel, with the boys taking on Dallas-Center Grimes and the girls clashing with Ballard.
The red-hot boys soccer team is also at home for a conference contest against Ballard at 7 p.m. Winners of five straight, ADM (7-2) is looking for a 3-0 start in Raccoon River play.
The Tigers have been lead by the play of senior Derek Gushiken, who has already crushed his previous career-high in goals scored in a single season with 12, and junior Noah Bardwell, who leads the team with five assists.
Now more of a focal point in the offense, Bardwell was expected to increase his scoring output this season. Gushiken’s scoring, on the other hand, has been surprising — especially when considering the four-year varsity starter had 14 goals through his first three seasons combined.
It’s not how the ADM coaching staff drew it up, but Gushiken has filled the Tigers’ need for scoring, and then some.
“Well, that wasn’t really our intent, and probably not Derek’s either because he’s more of a creator than a scorer,” ADM boys soccer head coach Bill Shields said. “But he’s stepped up and done both, actually.”
