ADM star senior sprinter Kari Dufoe showed off her abilities on Friday at the Drake Relays, taking second in the 100m dash with a time of 12.25 seconds, the fastest time in Class 3A this season.
Perhaps what’s most impressive about that accomplishment is Dufoe ran that time despite having scaled back her training recently because of injuries to her groin and shin area. The University of South Dakota track commit missed an entire week of races two weeks ago because of those ailments, then was limited to only running in 100m dashes in two invites early last week.
Tigers head coach Bart Mueller said he wanted to see Dufoe finish on a high note as a senior going to Drake while also protecting her from worsening the injuries. He had Dufoe purposely skip running in 200m and 400m races in the two invites early last week.
That strategy paid off on Friday, and Mueller said Dufoe seems to have turned the corner in her recovery.
“I hope I’ve got the OK from her parents and everybody else that she said we can go full bore [this week], that’s she’s back ready to run [200m and 400m races],” Mueller said. “She’s feeling really good. We’re definitely going to watch it and not get carried away, but get here geared up for the conference and state qualifying and state meets. So she’s set up really good right now. I think she kind of came back that, hey, without getting to aggressive, that she’s in a good spot moving forward.”
Dufoe an the rest of the Tigers are back in action on Tuesday in Adel for the Tiger Varsity relays against Boone, Des Moines North, Madrid, Perry, Van Meter and Waukee.
