A teen reported missing in Jefferson has been found safe.

Greene County Chief Deputy Jack Williams tells Raccoon Valley Radio that 14 year-old Janelle Brophy was found near her parent’s home in the 1300 block of K Avenue, in a timber area.

Brophy went missing around 2:30pm on Sunday and prompted a search by the Greene and Carroll County deputies along with the Jefferson, Churdan, Scranton and Grand Junction Fire departments. Williams says Janelle’s mother thought she was going for a walk but never returned home.  The search ended at 9:30pm Sunday when it got too dark for the safety of those involved in the search.  Williams notes that they started looking again at 7:30 this morning.

“(We) searched the areas that we searched yesterday and while looking for her, she walked out of the woods from a different direction than what we had been searching.  (She) said that when she was on her walk, she got lost and then it got dark and she finally found her way back as soon as daylight came.”

 Williams adds that they used thermal-imaging cameras, an Iowa State Patrol airplane and some local farmers donated utility vehicles to aid with the search.  There was no statewide Amber Alert notification and Williams explains why this incident didn’t meet the criteria.

“Two of the main ones are we have to either have a suspect in mind or a suspect vehicle and then we have to prove that she’s (Brophy) in eminent danger.  And we didn’t have those to do the Amber Alert.”

Brophy was transported to Greene County Medical Center by Greene County Emergency Medical Services for signs of dehydration.
