City of Perry crews conducted a smoke test of the sanitary sewer system in part of the town earlier this week.
Deputy Public Works Director Josh Wuebker says while the results didn’t have that “wow factor” they were hoping for, it did help identify some issues.
“We did find probably half a dozen houses where cleanouts were smoking. Some people did call in that their house was filling with smoke, which means that their house is not property vented.”
It did rain the day before the smoke testing, which Wuebker says could have been a factor but they’re going to continue efforts to find the root of the problem.
“We’re going to keep looking. We’re cameraing and jetting areas of town and stuff but we’ll probably do more smoke testing on the east side of town, and keep doing it. This was our first time doing it and I think it was really successful. It didn’t take a lot of time and it was pretty easy to do”.
Residents who had smoke in their home need to have them inspected as this means it’s likely sewer gases are also making their way into the building.
