Today we review family preparedness during Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa.
Greene County Public Health Director Becky Wolf says it’s always good to go over your family’s plan in case of severe weather.
“So what does that mean? Does it mean being more aware of what the weather conditions are like. Possibly having a plan for your family as to, what would you do if it starts to severely hail or even if the wind starts to blow heavily or we’re threatened with tornadoes. Where are you going to go for protection?”
Wolf adds that your plan should also include what to do if your power goes out and she suggests getting a weather radio that you can receive weather warnings and other information that is specifically for your location.
She stresses the importance to her staff about reviewing emergency plans with their clients during home visits and being aware and safe on the roads whenever there’s severe weather.
The medical center also has a group called the Greene County Emergency Preparedness Healthcare Coalition. It is a team of people from the hospital’s informational technology, nursing, environmental services, emergency room and public health departments that work with the Emergency Management Coordinator Dennis Morlan on developing plans for different disasters like severe weather.
Whenever severe weather threatens Greene, Dallas or Guthrie counties, Raccoon Valley Radio’s Severe Weather Action Team provides live, wall-to-wall coverage until the weather drops below severe levels.
