The Perry boys soccer team has high expectations heading into the new season which gets underway this Saturday with the Perry Invitational. The Bluejays are coming off back to back appearances at the boys state soccer tournament in Des Moines. Head Coach Gary Overla returns a strong nucleus off last year’s team but is still looking for ways to improve.
“We actually went to two-a-days during spring break week this year,” smiled Overla. “That was a completely new approach from previous years. I felt the benefits of getting 5 extra practices would really be big for us.”
Perry was one of the best defensive teams in the state last year and Overla is hoping the offense can improve and perform at that same high level again this year.
“I think the biggest difference from last year will be our offense. We have a number of guys in the lineup who can score and I think our offense will be a lot more effective this season. We have so many different guys who can find the back of the net that the trick will be finding the right combination.”
Perry opens the season this Saturday with the Perry Invitational at Dewey Field.
