We are now four days away from the primary election and there are two Republican candidates running for Greene County Sheriff.
Deputy Kirk Hammer has been with the Sheriff’s office since 2010 and says drugs are the biggest problem facing the county. He points out one area that may help the drug problem that he would like to accomplish in a four-year term as Sheriff.
“I think by setting up a phone tip line where people can call in anonymously to give drug information can help. Again getting that information shared with all of the deputies and have hot sheets so you know what areas you are looking in (and) what vehicles you are looking for. I think those can be done.”
Chief Deputy Jack Williams has been with the Sheriff’s office for the past 11 years. He says one of the biggest issues for the Sheriff’s office is not having enough deputies to handle the calls for service and by adding another deputy, they could assign someone to strictly handle major investigations. He explains what he would like to accomplish in a four-year term as Sheriff.

“I really want to start some programs with these younger kids, like first through sixth (grades) to let them know the effects of drugs while they’re young. So when they get older and they see a cop talking they don’t really pay attention. And that also helps us break the barriers between them, they see us a friend instead of a foe.”
