A DeSoto man has been arrested in connection with the shooting of his father.


According to the Madison County Sheriff’s office, an adult female called 911 just before 5am Monday after a woman covered in blood came to her door saying her boyfriend had been shot next door.
When deputies arrived at the residence, two miles east of Earlham, short time later, 45 year-old Howard Clayton Jr. of Earlham was found in the doorway of an outbuilding adjacent to his residence.
Madison County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jason Barnes tells Raccoon Valley Radio News, Clayton Jr. was shot once in the lower leg. Barnes referred to the injury as “severe” due to the large amount of blood that was lost. Clayton Jr. was transported via Mercy One helicopter to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. As of Tuesday morning, he remains in stable condition.
At 6:17am Monday, deputies located and arrested Howard’s son, 22 year-old Nicholas Clayton of De Soto, in connection with the shooting.
A search warrant was then conducted at a residence in De Soto. As a result, Nicholas, was charged with one count of willful injury – a class C felony.
Additional charges are pending and the investigation is still on-going.
According to online court records, Nicholas Clayton has also been charged with one felony count of assault with a weapon on a peace officer for an incident that occurred on March 7th in Dallas County. Online court documents state Clayton was an at risk suspect because he had a handgun pointed at an officer while family was inside a home. He has pled not-guilty to the charge and was released from the Dallas County Jail on May 17th. His next court date is set for June 29th.
