Dallas County residents could see a drop in property taxes during the next fiscal year.

The County’s proposed budget, which will be presented to the public during a special meeting this evening, decreases property tax rates by almost 11 percent for city residents and roughly 5 percent for those who reside in an unincorporated part of the county.

However, Board of Supervisors Chairman Mark Hanson says that doesn’t necessarily mean residents will save any money because of state rollback and depending on what school district’s decide to tax.

The state rollback rule says states that homeowners will have to pay taxes on more than two percent more of their property value compared to last year.  But Hanson says the county takes the smallest chunk of the total tax revenues collected compared to the rest of the state.

Tonight’s public meeting takes place at 7pm in the Board of Supervisors meeting room at 902 Court Street in Adel.
