spring_lakeMemorial Day weekend is viewed as the unofficial start to outdoor camping, swimming pools and theme parks opening and fun time with family and friends.

Greene County Conservation Director Dan Towers says Spring Lake Park’s first major weekend is Memorial Day weekend.  With the huge crowds of people expect this weekend, Towers wants to remind people of a few rules and safety precautions.

One rule is that people can only swim in the designated areas of the lake.  Towers points out that there are roped off areas on the lake where it’s safe for people to swim.  He also urges people to observe the open hours of the park.  It closes daily at 10:30pm.  He explains that the parks personnel take this rule very seriously.

“We’ve probably have been accused of enforcing that maybe a little more rigid than we should, but it works for us.  The campground is full and it’s quiet at 10:30(pm) (and) you can usually hear a pin drop.  Keep in mind that the park does close at 10:30(pm) that means that nobody can come in after 10:30(pm) and visitors have to leave by 10:30(pm) also.”

Towers comments that Spring Lake isn’t very deep which makes it safer for boating activities. The deepest the lake goes is to eight feet with a majority of it being between five to six feet.  He explains that if you don’t own a boat, there is a boat rental at the concessioner station.

Remember to be careful and mindful of any park rules if you were camping outdoors and visiting a park for a day during the unofficial start to the summer season this weekend.
