Athletic teams will often leave early for road trips, especially long ones. Reasons include giving the kids a chance to stop and stretch or perhaps eat a little something. Mechanical problems also occur, although rarely. The latter was the case for the bus the Greene County football team was on last Friday when they had difficulty with the bus that was taking the team to Red Oak.
Head coach Dean Lansman told Raccoon Valley Radio they were near Panora when a buzzer sounded and much of the power was lost. He said they limped along to Guthrie Center and got word to the bus barn in Jefferson that another bus would be needed. After getting near the Guthrie Center school and waiting for nearly an hour, the team started back on the road to Red Oak, only this time in a Guthrie Center bus. Coach Lansman indicated about 30 MPH was all they could manage going up the hills of Guthrie County, but they did make it to Casey. It was there that a second bus from Jefferson caught up to the team and they went the rest of the way without incident on one of their own buses. The team got to Red Oak just before 6 p.m., which is when they normally would take the field for a 7 p.m. game. The contest start on time.
The Greene County district is appreciative to the Guthrie Center district for their aid.
The Rams won the game 25-7 and are 1-3 overall and 1-1 in Class 2A District 8. Greene County hosts undefeated and highly rated Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Linduska Field. Coverage on KG98 begins at 6:30 p.m.
