At 5:10pm on Monday, the Greene County Sheriff’s office, the Jefferson Fire Department, the Scranton Fire and Rescue Department and the Greene County Emergency Medical Services responded to a two vehicle hit and run accident on Highway 25, just south of Scranton near 250th Street.
Sheriff Steve Haupert says 46 year-old Victoria Ann McCool of Ogden was traveling northbound on Highway 25 when her 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix was hit by a 1999 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by 30 year-old Michael Joseph Hofbauer of Coon Rapids. Haupert notes that earlier in the day, Hofbauer’s pickup truck went off the road and into the ditch. He was driving out of the ditch back onto the roadway when he struck the driver’s side of McCool’s Grand Prix. The 30 year-old male then reportedly drove away from the scene of the accident.
Haupert states that McCool was wearing her seatbelt but had to be extracted from her vehicle by the Jefferson Fire Department and was transported by Greene County EMS to the Greene County Medical Center for non-life threatening hip and leg injuries. Her current condition is not known at this time.
Hofbauer was later spotted by a Jefferson police officer. Hofbauer was stopped in the 400 block of North Cedar Street and was taken to GCMC for medical evaluation. Police Chief Dave Morlan says upon his release, Hofbauer was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence which is a first offense and a Class D Felony for causing serious injury by motor vehicle.
McCool’s Grand Prix is a total loss and Hofbauer’s pickup sustained no damage. Hofbauer remains in the Greene County Jail on a $10,000 cash-only bond with other possible charges pending adds Haupert.
