It was a busy day for the Jefferson Police Department with three accidents yesterday.
Police Chief Dave Morlan says two of the three accidents were weather-related and caused major damage.
The first accident happened at 7:52am when 45 year-old Robert Francis Schroeder of Scranton was traveling eastbound on Madison Street when his 2002 Jeep Wrangler collided with a 1995 GMC pickup truck driven by 33 year-old Damion Quinton Louk of Jefferson who was heading north on Oak Street. Morlan states that the intersection is uncontrolled and that both victims failed to see each other until it was too late to slow down to avoid the collision.
Schroeder’s vehicle sustained $3,000 in damages to the right side of the Jeep and he was cited for failure to yield to the vehicle on the right and Louk’s vehicle had $250 in damages and he was cited for failure to prove security against liability-accident related.
Another accident was at 3:29pm when 16 year-old Nolan Roger Wilson of Jefferson lost control of his 2002 Ford Explorer going northbound on Chestnut Street and hit a utility pole in the 500 block of South Chestnut Street causing $8,000 in damages to his vehicle. Wilson stated in the report that he was looking down and got distracted, then his vehicle slid on a patch of ice which led him to hitting the utility pole.
Then at 3:33pm, another weather-related accident involved a collision with a school bus. Chief Morlan says that Cassidy Adamson of Scranton was traveling eastbound on Ram Drive by the Greene County High School and her 2005 Dodge pickup truck slid on a patch of ice and hit a 2012 International School Bus that’s owned by the Paton-Churdan School District that was parked in front of the school. The pickup truck hit the left rear tire of the school bus that had 15 passengers in the vehicle causing $800 in damage to the left rear tire of the bus and $1,500 to Adamson’s vehicle. She was cited for failure to maintain control.
Morlan adds that in all three accidents, no one was injured. However, he would like to remind everyone that during these bitterly cold days during the winter, motorists need to take extra precaution and slow down to avoid any accidents when there maybe ice or snow on the roads.
