After several months of consideration, the Perry School Board agreed to a contract to replace the high school gym roof.
At their meeting this week, the Board awarded the $440,900 bid to Academy Roofing of Des Moines. Superintendent Lynn Ubben says they are excited to finally put this project into motion and eliminate the condensation problem that has been recurring for the past 12 years every August.
“We would have some fixes as a district. And then you really wouldn’t know if those fixes were successful until the next August when it got hot and you had condensation. So we feel more confident this time and we’re ready to get that behind us and go on.”
Once construction is complete, Ubben points out that they will consider renovating parts of the inside of the gym that have been damaged by past condensation problems.
Funds for the project will be from their building and grounds budget and the district will have warranties in place once its completed.
Work is set to begin this summer after school is out for the year and Ubben anticipates the new roof to be on by the completion date of August 14th.
She notes that while work is being done on the gym roof, no one is allowed to use the facility for safety reasons.
