Sometime in the next few months the Guthrie Center Fire Department will acquire a fancy new piece of equipment, designed to make fighting fires safer for them, as well those individuals they save from burning buildings. The SYS Infrasys X-Series thermal imager essentially allows the fire fighters x-ray vision to see through heavy smoke and some walls in identifying where people are inside of a fire. Guthrie Center Fire Chief Dave Embleton said at this week’s city council meeting that the piece is the latest and greatest in fire fighting technology, but says the gadget has a price tag of about ten thousand dollars. The Fire Department will apply in March for a funds matching grant from the Guthrie County Community Foundation, which could save the department approximately five grand on the thermal imager.
