perry policeSpring open burning season starts next week in Perry and while residents are permitted to burn yard waste, there are rules that need to be followed.

Open burning is not allowed until April 1st.  At that point, citizens can burn yard waste only from 10am until sundown through May 31st.

Police Chief Eric Vaughn says there are also some common sense things that need to be remembered.

“Not burning when it’s too windy, or the leaves are wet, or the grass is wet.  You also need to stay 30 feet away from anyone else’s buildings or property.  And, with any fire of course, especially with yard waste, it needs to be watched at all times.  So if you’re done for the day, that fire either needs to be burned completely out or extinguished before you go back into the house or leave for the day.”

The City of Perry encourages residents to use alternate methods to dispose of yard waste when possible, including their free yard waste pickup service on Wednesdays starting next month.
