JEFFERSON AIRPORTThe location for a new animal shelter in Greene County may have hit a snag.

The proposed location for the new shelter is at the Jefferson Municipal Airport.  However, one Airport Commissioner doesn’t agree.  Jim Forbes says his main concern is the shelter not following Federal Aviation Administration guidelines.

“(There are) quite a few restrictions on non-aviation use of FAA-supported airport property, which brings up some stipulations.”

When Forbes asked if there were other locations that were being considered, he was told there were none.  He does agree that a new shelter is needed for the county, but not at the airport.

President of People for Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) in Jefferson Anne Wenthold says they want the shelter’s location to be in Jefferson.  She notes that they want to have a big enough facility for play areas for the animals, an office area, a restroom, a quarantine area for sick animals and they want it to be more visible.

Jefferson City Administrator Mike Palmer tells Raccoon Valley Radio what the City is doing with the location situation.

“City Council really hasn’t had a chance to get together and talk about it.  Right now the best thing is that we’re still looking at all of our options out there.  If that location (with the airport) doesn’t work out, we’ll just have to look at some other possible locations.”

The airport commission will not vote on the location of the shelter until the land appraisal process is complete.
