A Dallas County landmark has been awarded a grant from the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA).

The Seth Dayton House, located south of Bouton, was chosen as one of eight historic preservation projects and programs in the state to receive a grant through the DCA’s Certified Local Government program.

The Seth Dayton House is a rare property and the only extant stagecoach stop in Dallas County.  The $12,100 grant will help pay for a phase one archeological survey.  The information gathered will be used to submit a National Register of Historic Places nomination for the site and building.

The Certified Local Government program encourages federal, state and local governmental partnerships, provides historic preservation training and technical assistance and encourages preservation and wise use of historic resources at the local level.  A total of $96,000 in grants were awarded this cycle.
