Several Greene County students performed well on Saturday at the Iowa High School Speech Association’s State Large Group contest.
Head coach Kelley Gray says they took five events to Waukee, where only one event received an overall I-rating. Ensemble Acting with junior Michael Kennedy and sophomore Kara Betts performed “Our Depression Speech” and received a I-rating. The other events including Choral Reading, Reader’s Theater, One Act Play and Musical Theater each received an overall II-rating.
Gray says she’s proud of the work that all the students put in during rehearsals, with most of the practicing happening at nights and on weekends to prepare for contest. Over half of the students were first time speech participants, which Gray believes was wonderful to get new people involved.
Gray is now looking forward to district individual speech contest which is February 27th.
