When Greene County lost to Gilbert in high school softball on May 24 in Jefferson by a 13-10 score the Rams were missing the only two starters back from the team that finished third in the Class 3A State Tournament the past two seasons. When the Rams made a return trip to Gilbert on Friday night, not much was missing in a 21-1 run-rule victory that sent Coach Tom Kennedy’s Rams to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in Heart of Iowa Activities conference play.
Junior Hannah Promes allowed 13 hits in the first meeting, but just five on Friday night as she picked up the pitching win. Promes did not walk a batter and she record five strikeouts. The run was unearned.
The Rams led 10-0 after 4-1/2 innings, but the Tigers scored in the fifth to keep from losing by the 10-run rule after five innings. Greene County responded with 11 more runs in the sixth for the final margin. Samantha Hardaway had a triple and two singles and drove in three runs, and Sydney Koch doubled in two runs and had a SAC fly for another RBI. Megan Carey singled three times and collected two RBI with Promes getting two singles and a pair of runs batted in. Carleigh Paup doubled and singled, and Megan Durbin had an RBI on a triple and she also added a base hit. Jenna Beyers was credited with two singles and one RBI. Kylie Roach and Kassi Lamoureux each had their first varsity hits and both drove in a run. Onica Delp did not have a hit, but did drive in a run with a ground ball out.
Next up for Greene County is a Monday, June 6 game at home in Jefferson vs. North Polk (Alleman). The contest can be heard on KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com around 7:15 p.m.
