logo-Iowa-DNREarly muzzleloader season begins today in Iowa.

Guthrie County Conservation Director Joe Hanner describes where some of the best areas are for hunters to look for deer this fall.

“Whitetail deer really love to feed on cut corn right after it gets combined. They also like hayfields, legumes, fresh green browse, those are two prime food sources that if I had an early muzzleloader tag I’d be looking at trying to catch them coming out of bedding areas and moving toward those food sources.”

He adds that besides some of the avid hunters who enjoy early muzzleloader season, it has diminished over the years.

Early muzzleloader season is from October 15th through the 23rd.
