jefferson welcomeWith a chance of snow this weekend, Jefferson residents are reminded of the City’s snow ordinance.

When there’s a snow accumulation of at least one-half inch, residents must remove their vehicles from the public streets, alleys and city-owned off street parking areas. Public Works Director Dave Morlan explains the process that they go through to clear the roads of snow.

“It typically takes two passes. They open the centers first and then they plow it back to the curb. Once it’s back to the curb and it’s done snowing, then it would be okay to park on the streets again.”

The ordinance remains in effect until the snow stops falling and it has been cleared from the roads. Morlan points out that there is another ordinance against property owners blowing snow back into the streets.

“There is an ordinance that prohibits depositing snow on the streets. It’s to make things easier and more efficient for us. Once we get those streets fully plowed, we don’t want to have to go back around and clean up after someone’s blowing snow into the street.”

Failure to comply with the snow ordinance can result in a citation, possible towing of the vehicle at the owner’s expense, or both.

Police Chief Mark Clouse says during the last snow event last weekend, officers issued 15 tickets.
