Freshman Molly Lutmer had taken that shot a thousand times, both in her driveway and on the practice court. Lutmer drained a three pointer from the right wing with 4 seconds to go in overtime to give Perry a thrilling 55-54 victory over Winterset. Trailing 54-52 after a pair of Mia Olson free throws, Perry rushed up court and found Lutmer who got the shot away before 6-2 center Madison Wauters could get her long arms in range of blocking it.
“When I let it go, it actually didn’t feel very good,” smiled Lutmer on the Cleanworks Auto Wash halftime show. “I really didn’t think it was going to go in. We had a play to get up court as fast as we could and find somebody with the cleanest look. It just happened to be me.”
While the freshman won the game for Perry, it was the experienced senior combination of Emma Olejniczak and Grace Marburger that rallied Perry to force overtime. Marburger had a critical four point swing in a matter of seconds to pull Perry within 2 at 52-50 with a minute to go in OT. Olejniczak enjoyed her best offensive game of the season finishing with 16 points going 5-9 from the floor and 5-6 from the foul line.
“Molly (Lutmer) has an incredible shot,” added Olejniczak. “She has done a great job adjusting to our style as a freshman. I know she has a shot that a lot of college players would take. She is going to be a good player.”
Marburger led all scorers with 22 points while Wauters led Winterset with 22.
Perry heads to the Christmas break riding a 3 game winning streak and currently sits 7-2 on the year.
