Kyle Nevitt scored 14 first half points as Perry defeated Winterset 58-46 in Raccoon River Conference boys basketball. Nevitt finished with 19 points and his strong first half play allowed Perry to open up a 27-18 advantage. The Jays trailed only once all night with Winterset coming no closer than 5 in the second half. Janier Puente added 17 points while Connor Nielsen chipped in 9. Rashon Ivory set up a number of easy baskets with his ball handling and ball distribution.
Both teams started slowly on the offensive end with the Bluejays leading 9-4 after the first quarter. Perry picked up the pace in the second quarter scoring 18 points. Winterset was led by Casey Kleemier’s 13 points. The talented sophomore entered the night one of the RRC’s leading scorers at 20 points per game but the long arms of Nielsen proved to be effective in slowing down the youngster.
After an 0-4 start to the season, Perry has now won 2 in a row and currently sit 2-4 on the year and 2-2 in RRC action. The Bluejays return to the hardwood January 6th with a trip to the Roundhouse and a matchup with Ballard.
