The Heart of Iowa Activities Conference track & field meet Tuesday had fans talking, but not all the conversations were about what was taking place in Baxter. Greene County native Dean Lansman is leaving the Greene County school district this summer to become a teacher/coach in the North Polk (Alleman) school district. Lansman has coached in Jefferson the past 15 years and is a graduate of East Greene High School. He currently is a high school science teacher, the Rams’ Activities Director, and head boys’ track & field coach. He’s also been the head football coach, a position he relinquished in January.

Lansman told Raccoon Valley Radio he will teach science in the high school in Alleman, as well as be an assistant coach in football and boys’ track & field. Both Greene County and NP feature red and black colors, and both are members of the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference.

The Greene County school board is expected to act on his resignation at a special meeting on May 10. Not only does Lansman’s impending departure leave the Rams without an A.D. and head boys’ track & field coach, the district is currently without a head girls’ track & field coach, as well as girls and boys cross-country, due to the early retirement at the end of this school year by Kelly Simpson, who’s been a teacher/coach in Jefferson for over 30 years. The football position was filled in late February by Mitch Moore.
