We’ve all heard of spring cleaning, but how about fall cleaning? The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is looking to help rural Iowa communities clean out abandoned commercial structures .

The DNR has a total of $50,000 to use on inspecting and properly removing asbestos from abandoned commercial buildings. The funding is available for communities of 5,000 people or less. These funds come from the Derelict Building Grant Program. Structural engineering assessments are used to determine the physical characteristics and stability of these structures.

Projects selected may apply in 2018 for additional program funding for related tasks including building removal or renovation.
