An innovator and leader in the grain business will return to Greene County for one last harvest this weekend.

Ninety-one-year-old Alma Shorey Young was recognized as the only woman to run a grain elevator in the country from the 1950s to the 70s. She was the general manager for grain of Milligan Brothers. She began work as a secretary at Milligan Brothers in 1952. By 1959, she was named general manager for grain and remained in that position until 1972. She now resides in an assisted living facility in Mountain Home, Arkansas. She will be traveling back up to Jefferson with her 64-year-old nephew who also lives in Arkansas.

The Greene County Historical Society is hosting a special reception in Young’s honor tomorrow at the historical museum in Jefferson at 10am. A short program will feature Young’s career and her life. Historical Society members Chuck Offenburger and Jerry Roberts will the lead the presentation and a question and answer period as well.

The event is free and open to the public.
