Even though Spring Clean-Up Week ended a couple of weeks ago in Jefferson, residents can still open burn to get rid of unwanted yard waste.

Police Chief Mark Clouse says open burning is not allowed in the city street, sidewalk or alleyway. However, he describes what is acceptable to burn in.

“It needs to stay on your property. Some people burn in a barrel, other people might burn in a wire-enclosure (and) some people just open burn. All of those are acceptable.”

Clouse stresses that open burning is only allowed for yard waste and not any other types of items. He also asks residents to be respectful of their neighbors.

“Sometimes neighbors are burning and the smoke is getting into my house. So we just ask people to try to be mindful of your neighbors. Let’s not burn leaves on a day they might be having an outdoor graduation party or something next door. Just common courtesy, just neighborly thing to do.”

Clouse reminds everyone to monitor their burn piles and have resources ready to put out the fire when it’s done. Open burning is allowed all year round and runs from 7am to 9pm. Anyone with questions can call City Hall at 386-3111.
