Humane Society of Perry

The Humane Society of Perry recently announced it will be disbanding soon, prompting a lot of questions from the public about the future of the City’s stray animal population.

Humane Society President Breanna Morman assures people they have plans to handle everything before and after the shelter officially closes its doors. “We are still operating as we have been, and we will not do any sort of disbanding until all of the animals in our care are put into a forever home. So we will continue to act as we have been, taking care of the cats and dogs that are in our care. We are not currently accepting any additional cats or dogs, just because we do have a high number right now that we need to get vetted and put into homes.”

The majority of the animals still under the Humane Society’s care are kittens, so Morman says the shelter will remain open for a while longer as the cats get big enough to be vetted and adopted. To that end, the Human Society will continue their “Name Your Adoption Price” promotion on all cats for at least the remainder of July. In the meantime, progress continues on constructing a new cat and dog shelter in Perry, though it will not be under the umbrella of the Humane Society as originally planned.

Instead, it will be operated by a recently-formed business entity named Raccoon River Pet Rescue. The shelter will be located on six acres of land on the south side of Highway 141, near the Water Treatment Plant. In preparation for when that shelter is operational, Morman says the City is seeking a different location nearby to house the strays of Perry.
