The Greene County Elementary School has several groups of volunteers that interact and learn with the pre-kindergarten through fourth grade students.
Principal Scott Johnson says one program they partner with the Jefferson Public Library is the guest reader program. “They do a great job of setting up readers for us at the elementary. And those readers come in once a week to each of the classrooms and they read a book and do other things with the children. It’s just been a very beneficial partnership between us and the public library.”
Johnson points out that RSVP 55+ also sends volunteers who specifically work with students on an individual basis with classroom work during the school day. He adds that having volunteer groups to help younger students is an important resource. “They’re invaluable because they provide us things that we couldn’t do with just our staff. So it’s invaluable that we get that community involvement.
Johnson appreciates the work that volunteers do to help students achieve their academic goals.
